The leading actor in the Dover Operatic and Dramatic Society’s Jesus Christ Superstar has spoken about his love for acting.
Karl Fagg, 24, of Beaconsfield Road is no stranger to the stage, as this is the second time he has played Jesus in the same play.
The DODS rendition, set to be performed from May 28 to 31 at the White Cliffs Theatre in Astor Avenue, will see the Bible’s story of Judas betraying Jesus reenacted.
It is based on the version made by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice which gives an insight into the events that happened before Jesus’ death.
“I did this play when I was at school, around eight years ago, we went to America and performed it there,” he said. “We had a one thousand capacity per night, spread over seven nights.
“This time the auditorium holds 340 per night, so still a fairly big crowd.”
Karl has always enjoyed singing and was able to develop his interest through school, at Astor College for the Arts in Astor Avenue.
“I have done mainly amateur stuff, I’ve done a couple of bits for DODS and another company called Blackfish as well and kept up with that.”
His favourite style of performance is one that includes music and singing.
Mr Fagg works at Bannatyne’s Health Club in Folkestone, and said an acting career is an unrealistic concept due to the competition and the need to concentrate on it alone.
He added: “It is hard to go professional when you are working all of the time.
“It is such a hard field to get into and there are so many people out there that want to do it." - Actor, Karl Fagg
“It is such a hard field to get into and there are so many people out there that want to do it.
“You can’t have a second job and try to get into it, you either have to put everything into it or nothing.”
His girlfriend, Joedi Graham, plays the role of Mary Magdalene, who herself has gone as far as Croatia with her acting talent.
Karl added: “We rehearse at home and we help each other learn lines.”
Asked who has the hardest role in the show, Karl said that Scott Cain, who plays Judas, has the most complex task.
He continued: “It’s one of the hardest parts in the show, it’s even harder than my part, there is a lot of vocal training involved.
“He has definitely dedicated a lot of time in making it pitch perfect.”
Mr Fagg described the show as educational, a show for everyone, and something “completely different.”
“Its not just your bog standard musical,” he said. “This is a rock opera and most people know the story so they know it is not going to end happy."
Tickets cost £10 and can be bought from Ann and Pam’s florist in Cherry Tree Avenue, the Rack of Ale in Ladywell, or the Lighthouse Inn at Capel-le-Ferne.
Parties of 10 will receive one free ticket.
