A menswear store has left Dover after a century.

Burton, in Market Square, closed officially for the last time yesterday.

Manager Patricia Coleman carried out the final lock-up of the premises last night and told KentOnline: "I have had some amazing customers. Dover has been a very loyal town."

Burton had been part of the Arcadia Group, which went into administration last November.

It was this month bought by Boohoo the online clothes retailer.

It meant that Burton had to go as a store chain nationwide.

Ms Coleman announced the local branch's final shutdown on the Facebook group page Dover for Dovorians yesterday.

'Another piece of Dover’s history gone...'

She wrote: "So that's it the end of an era. I locked the door for the last time.

"I've served thousands of customer advising and helping them find the perfect suit for so many occasions, some happy and some sad.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their support, loyalty and well wishes."

Her post attracted 114 comments by this morning.

Tony Mango wrote: "I bought my first two piece suite from this store in the mid -1980s, felt very posh. Goodbye, God bless and thanks."

Michael Rodgers wrote: "Another piece of Dover’s history gone - thank you Burton for your services over the years."

The Dover branch had actually served its last customer in December as, due to being a non-essetntial shop, it was subject to the repeated lockdowns during the present coronavirus pandemic.

It had been in Cannon Street since the 1920s and moved to its present location in Market Square in the 1950s.

Ms Coleman began work for Arcadia in 1995 and moved to Burton in 2000, becoming the Dover manager in 2004.
