A lit firework sparked a grass fire leading to a warning to the public about safely setting them off.

Firefighters were called after the incident was reported in Dover last night.

Firefighters believe the incident was caused by a firework setting light to the grass

Four fire engines were sent to put out the blaze which had set an area of ground alight off North Military Road near the Western Heights.

Crews used hose reel jets and a portable pump to extinguish the fire which was reported just after 8pm.

Firefighters were at the scene for just under two hours ensuring the flames had not spread and was brought under control.

The fire service says the cause was accidental when a lit firework set fire to the grass.

A reminder about firework safety has been issued by the fire service in the wake of the incident.

A spokesman said: "Crews are reminding people to take extra care when lighting fireworks and to always stand well back.

"Never go near a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode."

Further information about firework safety advice is available here.
