A flat in Dover was struck by lightning last night which set fire to the roof.

One crew from Kent Fire and Rescue was called to Ladywell at 11.45am, where there was a small roof fire to the rear of one of the shops.

It took crews half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Jamie Muddle, watch manager said: "We've had quite a few calls like this. It's not unusual, sometimes they set places alight and other times they just cause a loud bang but it's always worth getting it inspected. It could cause structural damage or it could still be smoldering.

"Our crew inspected it and made sure it was all out before they left the scene."

Hot weather across the county has caused thunder storms recently, with levels of humidity increasing.
