The taxpayers of Dover have had to fork out hundreds of pounds over the last two weeks to fix the fountain in Market Square that has been repeatedly vandalised.

The district council is ‘disappointed’ that incidents of foaming have happened on three occasions.

It is suspected that washing up liquid is put into the fountain’s water system, causing it to overflow with bubbles.

Despite it being quite a spectacular sight, the council told the Mercury that it is imperative that the system is drained and fully cleared, costing around £250 each time these incidents happen.

The spokesman added: “After three occasions the system has to be drained and fully cleared, costing around £250 a time. This is money that could have been spent on other services.

“ Such vandalism is a criminal offence, and we will work with Kent Police to fully investigate such matters.

“If anyone sees such activity taking place, we would urge them to contact the police immediately.”
