A bare-chested man who stabbed someone in an unprovoked daylight attack has been jailed.

Michael Stanton, 54, of no fixed address, had denied GBH with intent but has been sent to prison for six years.

He had been found guilty at a trial at Canterbury Crown Court.

The victim, a 28-year-old man, was walking with a friend from Dover town centre through the subway in Cambridge Road towards the beach side of the A20.

It was just before 3pm on Friday, May 13, 2016 that a bare-chested man came from behind him and stabbed him once in the back.

The offender then walked back under the subway towards the town centre while the victim’s friend called an ambulance.

Stanton was identified on CCTV by local officers as the assailant who was following the victim and his friend.

The knife was never recovered.

Investigating officer Det Con Keith Rochford said: "Stanton denied the assault from the outset although his story changed several times.

"The wound missed the victim’s vital organs by millimetres" - Keith Rochford

"He is a nasty individual with a history of violence and the assault was completely unprovoked.

"The wound missed the victim's vital organs by millimetres.

"Physically he has recovered but psychologically the effects will stay with him for a long time."

DC Rochford said the six year sentence, with an additional two years on licence upon his release, reflected the seriousness of the offence.

He added: "I hope this sends a strong message to people that violence of any kind is not acceptable."
