Battle of Britain Memorial wing building in Capel-le-Ferne shaping up

The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust’s new wing building in Capel-le-Ferne is well under way.

The groundworks have finished on schedule despite the wet and windy weather during the winter and the contractor, Epps Construction, has now taken delivery of the specialist steel sections that will form the building.

The framework will recreate the shape of RJ Mitchell’s iconic Spitfire wing to create a building with a first floor balcony area offering views across the Channel.

Despite the building work, the national memorial to the Few is still open to visitors.

The wing will offer an audio-visual experience in one half of the building and will house education facilities in the other half, together with a new café and shop area in the circular central area.

While the trust has raised the money needed to complete the construction of the building, more support is still required to ensure the digital experience can be completed in time for an opening in 2015 as part of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The building is scheduled for completion towards the end of the summer.
