A man caught on his mobile phone while driving has had his car seized.

Officers stopped a 30-year-old man driving a black Ford Focus after they spotted him using his mobile while stopped at traffic lights in Maison Dieu Road, Dover.

Subsequent checks showed he had no licence and insurance.

Press officer Steve Knight said: “He was reported for summons for licence and insurance offences, and also had his vehicle seized.”

Kent Police RPU tweeted about the incident this morning.

Officers later dealt with a foreign lorry driver who was caught on his mobile phone at the wheel.

Press officer Steve Knight said: “This was a 50-year-old man driving a Romanian-registered lorry, again along Maison Dieu Road, at 8.45am.

“He was spotted talking on his phone while approaching the traffic lights and was given an on-the-spot fine of £200 and six points on his licence.”

This month saw the introduction of stronger punishments for those caught using their mobile phones while driving.

Distracted drivers will now get six points on their licence instead of three, and have to pay a £200 fine instead of the old price of £100.
