Fears that cross-Channel ferry services could be the next terrorist target have been dismissed by MP Charlie Elphicke.
A national newspaper has reported that bolstered security at the country’s airports could cause opportunists to plan a maritime attack, claiming that ministers called the ferries a “weak link” in Britain’s overall defence against terrorists.
But Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke said an attack on a ship was “highly unlikely.”
He said: “The aim of these attacks is to be in symbolic places in high public display so I would not expect one on a ferry.
“Our national security is a cause for concern but I welcome the fact that the government has stepped up security at the Port of Dover, and everyone can see it is going on because there are more delays and tailbacks on our roads.
“We need to be vigilant ourselves as we are all part of the battle against terrorism.”
P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways released a joint statement saying: “The Port of Dover, together with its ferry operator partners, is already working closely with UK and French border authorities to deliver heightened security checks following the attacks in Paris.
“We will continue to follow the advice of government and its agencies.”
The Port of Dover has advised passengers to allow extra time while the extra checks go ahead.
