Plans to create a national war memorial on Dover's Western Heights have been revealed.

The memorial would list all those from the British Commonwealth who died in the two world wars.

The project is being put forward by London-based architect and landscape team Paula Craft and John Pegg, who have been working in Dover for the past two years.

Their suggestion of creating a national war memorial at Drop Redoubt has already found favour with district councillor John Goodwin.

"The under-used Western Heights area can only be good for the town and area," he said.

Under the plans, the memorial would take the form of a series of free-standing stone walls within Drop Redoubt inscribed with the names of all the 1.7 million people who died. The names would be listed in the order they were killed, with no preference given to rank or nationality.

It is hoped to gain local and national support for the scheme this year, begin work next year and open the memorial in 2014, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
