Consultation continues for plans for a new-look town square.

People can still view exhibited plans today and tomorrow and take part in surveys.

The businesses group Dover Town Team and Dover District Council have applied for a grant of just over £3 million from the Coastal Communities Fund to renovate Market Square.

The centrepiece is a new splash water feature to replace the current fountain.

The aim is also to improve connectivity between the existing town centre and the new St James' leisure and retail complex.

The roadway is to be reduced in dominance and traffic slowed, to provide a safer environment for pedestrians

The water feature includes water jets together with flat areas of paving outside of the splash fountain areas.

A fine film of water would pass over the paving allowing people to sit on benches for a cooling paddle in the summer.

The introduction of trees along King Street would soften its appearance, creating an avenue and providing shade, again for summer.

There is to be improved provision for bus services to Market Square and St James' plus a place for coach party drop offs.

Parking and delivery layouts are also to be adjusted.

DDC says benefits will included an attractive focal point to encourage visitors and shoppers to stay for longer and provision for community events and markets.

The flat water feature will give new space for multi-use purposes.

Improvements are also planned for Flying Horse Lane, which is now used more frequently since the opening of St James' in March as a direct pathway to the original town centre.

The plans include creating a pocket park and riverside homes. The former telephone exchange could be refurbished and turned into homes or a bar/restaurant.

Dover Town Team had been unsuccessful in applying for a £2.9 million grant from the CCF last year but hopes there will be more success with new support from the council.

Presentation boards and paper survey forms are still at Dover Library today and at a stall at Market Square tomorrow.
