A dog has been seized after it bit ponies in a field while its owners looked on before driving off and leaving it behind.

They were seen laughing as their pet attacked but instead of retrieving it they drove away.

It happened at Little Farthingloe Farm, Folkestone Road, Dover, at 3pm yesterday.

The restaurant and farm shop's management said in a Facebook post: "We are deeply shocked that the owners of the dog drove away, apparently laughing, while it was in the field attacking the ponies."

It is understood that when the dog attacked the ponies, customers and staff at the restaurant were alerted and ran over.

Two people in a car then drove off, leaving behind the dog and a third person who had been with them, a woman.

The pet has now been taken in by a dog warden and police have spoken to the remaining woman, managers say.

The victims were a white pony called Oscar and a black one, Dudley.

Both were seen by a vet and given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to help ease the wounds.

They remained in shock yesterday but were monitored in case further treatment was needed.

The management post yesterday said: "Thank you so much to all the customers and staff who helped with Oscar and Dudley this afternoon.

"Both of them seem to still be in shock but have eaten some dinner.

"The police are investigating and hopefully they (the dog owners) will be located."

A police spokesman said: "Officers attended and the dog was seized. Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."
