An attempt to auction a flaked piece of paint claimed to be from Dover’s Banksy mural has come and gone.

The item, about four inches long, was offered on the online auction site eBay for £1,200 plus a charge of £29 for posting.

But the sale was ended at 7.30pm yesterday.

A notice on the web item said: “This listing was ended by the seller because there was an error in the listing.”

The seller is listed as godden.deal but there is no suggestion that there is a connection with the owners of the building the mural was on, the Godden family of Folkestone.

The mural, which is on the former Castle Amusements building facing Townwall Street, has attracted worldwide interest since it suddenly appeared on May 7.

It symbolises Brexit by showing a workman on a ladder chipping away at one of the 12 stars of the European Union.

It is placed on the A20 at Dover, one of the two main routes drivers use to catch ferries for the Continent.

Banksy artworks can sell for more than £1 million.
