Meeting held at Western Docks, Port of Dover over future of port

More than 100 people attended a meeting to discuss the regeneration of the Port of Dover.
The meeting was held on Wednesday last week at the Cruise Terminal and discussed a range of topics including regeneration, how the port and town can work together, the waterfront development, the environment, and also the latest concept to include community directors.
This comes after an announcement was made earlier this month by shipping and port minister Stephen Hammond for greater involvement between the port and community.
The announcement meant that people in the town can have a say in the running of the port.
The main issues discussed at a round table meeting included restoring pride to Dover and turning it into what was coined Destination Dover, a place that people will want to visit which is key to the town’s regeneration.
The idea was also made to link attractions and celebrate Dover’s maritime heritage with the help of the port.
It is hoped that this will create jobs in the area and also protect existing ones.
Tim Waggot, chief executive of the port, said: “I and the Port of Dover team were delighted and humbled by the incredibly positive way in which so many members of the public took time out of their day to work with us in developing our shared vision.
“To experience such local engagement was a clear sign of the progress that has been made by many people here at the port to transform our relationships with our customers and community.”
Other ideas discussed at the meeting included how to develop the waterfront and working on developing the marina, maritime training, traffic improvements and residential development.
The new Port and Community Forum and the Port Users Group have been successful in developing the Bluebird Heritage Trail which would be a tourist trail including a number of historical attractions.
The idea is to use pavement markings and signs to lead tourists around Dover’s landmarks.
Mr Waggot added: “I thank everyone who attended and for their desire to work with us at every step of our exciting journey to deliver for Dover.”
