A volunteer force, created as a result of the pandemic is ready to swing into action should another crisis hit its town.

Detailing the birth of Together4Dover in March 2020 was guest speaker Michelle Legumi of the Beacon Church.

She has spearheaded the wide-ranging contributions to the life of hundreds of people during the coronavirus emergency.

Those helped included the homeless and lonely.

One of the successes was the volunteer manning of a telephone line, supplied to the group free, to give help and encouragement to the lonely.

Mrs Legumi told how Together4Dover delivered more than 800 food parcels to families.

Some of the food, she explained, came from liners in Dover which, because of the virus, were unable to welcome passengers on board. Surplus food from supermarkets was also gifted.

She also reported that 500 Easter eggs were distributed while 800 free hotel meals were taken to needy families.

. Help was provided for necessary laundry assistance for the homeless and scores of toys for local children as well as food hampers at Christmas.

Mrs Legumi thanked those who had donated money to help in the group's work including £10,000 from Dover District Council and financial assistance from Saga.

She revealed that the team, backed by the local authority, was ready to provide help should another crisis hit Dover and it would welcome the new volunteers.
