Public exhibition on Operation Stack comes to Dover

Dover residents will be able to speak up about proposals for a new major lorry park to help improve Operation Stack.

A public exhibition, held by Highways England (HE), will be at Dover Town Hall from 2pm to 8pm today (Thursday).

There will be six in total, with the others held at Folkestone, Ashford, Sellindge and Hawkinge.

Traffic has been known to stack up along the A20, causing chaos in Dover

Two potential sites have been earmarked near the M20 along with four ways in which it could be used.

They are both near junction 11 near Stanford and can be easily accessed from the motorway.

Each option could help to prevent the need for the stretch of motorway to be closed when there is disruption to cross-channel services, according to HE.

HE said it could range from emergency use only to providing a truck stop area, 24 hours a day.

The plans come after strikes in Calais caused disruption throughout the summer last year.

Truckers were queuing for hours on the M20, which was branded as a lorry park during the chaos.

Kevin Bown, the HE asset manager for Kent, said:“Hundreds of people have already come along to our exhibitions, and we’ve received many responses to the consultation in its first two weeks.

“We’ve still got four weeks left and we would like to hear from as many people as possible.

“I strongly urge anyone with a view on the plans to have their say as part of the consultation.

“They can do this by our online response form, by email, by post or by attending one of our events and filling in our response form in person.”

People will be asked on their views on the suitability of the sites and how the park should run.

The consultation runs until midnight on Monday, January 25.
