Suspect charged after Second World War grenade found in Dover

A man has been charged with firearms offences after a Second World War grenade was found

Police and the bomb squad were called to a home in Lascelles Road, Dover, on Monday and arrested a man after finding a grenade.

A suspect has been charged with firearms offences

Barney Buttifint has since been charged with two counts of possessing a firearm without a firearm certificate.

He has also been charged with one count of possessing ammunition in quantities in excess of those authorised in a firearm certificate.

The 36-year-old of Lascelles Road, appeared in Folkestone Magistrates' Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear before Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday, August 30.

One resident reported seeing police enter the property on Monday, and that uniformed officers were still there the following day to the arrest.

"I have no idea what has been happening, but there are so many officers in the street," they added.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed that the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team were called to the address, where they found a Second World War vintage inert grenade.
