An 18-year-old has been charged following an alleyway attack that left a young man's ear "hanging by a thread".

Callum Page is accused of assaulting Jake McDonald, 25, near St Mary's Church in Cannon Street, Dover, last month.

The victim was taken to hospital following the incident at about 2.40am on Saturday, November 9.

Pictures posted on Facebook by his sister, Kirstie Godfrey, showed his battered and bloodied face, which was so severely swollen that he could barely open his eyes.

The 27-year-old said last month that she burst into tears when she first saw her brother in hospital.

"I never cry but I couldn't help it when I saw him," she said. "His face was a mess and his head was still bleeding.

"His ear is hanging by a thread. When the doctors were telling us what injuries he suffered we thought they were never going to stop.

"He's also got a deep gash in his neck, chunks out of his arm and his hands have been cut badly."

Mr McDonald's teeth were also said to be pushed back and his jaw "in pieces".

He had been on a night out at The Duchess pub in Bench Street.

Ms Godfrey added: "We'd like to thank everyone for getting in touch - it really means a lot.

"Now we just want justice for what happened and for someone to be held responsible."

Page, of Cleveland Close in Dover, has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

He appeared in front of magistrates in Canterbury yesterday and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Monday, January 13.
