Ten people have been arrested after anti-immigration protesters clashed with police in Dover.

There were ugly scenes in the town this afternoon as officers were confronted by demonstrators on the A20 near the docks.

Problems had been anticipated after both pro and anti factions on either side of the debate surrounding migrants crossing the Channel announced their intention to hold events in the town today.

Kent Police called in reinforcements from other areas, including Norfolk and Hampshire, as they worked to minimise disruption and kept the two events apart.

Tensions rose on the A20, which was blocked by crowds of anti-immigration protesters near the junction with York Street.

There were several tussles between officers and individuals, with nationalist YouTuber 'Little Veteran' thought to have been among those arrested.

This afternoon, police confirmed they had arrested nine people, which was later updated to 10, on suspicion of offences including assaulting an emergency worker and racially-aggravated public order.

Chief Superintendent Nigel Brookes said: "Kent Police was clear that we would facilitate peaceful protest but would not tolerate violence or disorder.

"Our experienced officers sought to keep transport routes moving and balance the rights of those taking part in the protests with those living and working in Dover.

"We stated that it was unacceptable for anyone to use the event as an excuse for criminal behaviour and we were robust in taking action against those who did.

"Enquiries will continue to identify any further offences which took place during the protests."

Meanwhile, Dover MP Natalie Elphicke tweeted her praise for the way police handled the events and thanked people for staying away.
