A violent demonstrator who used a makeshift baton to fight other protestors has been jailed.

Michael Green, caged for nine-and-a-half months, is the latest thug to face justice after the notorious Dover riots last year.

Trouble broke out between far right and anti-fascist protestors, which led to fighting in the streets on January 30, 2016.

Green was filmed throwing objects in Effingham Street and was also caught swinging an improvised wooden baton at people.

Kent Police detectives reviewed hundreds of hours of footage captured on the day and shared images of those involved with other forces across the UK.

Green was identified and arrested at his home address in Wales on on Friday, June 24, last year.

Green, 43, formerly of Corbett Street in Treorchy , South Wales, later pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Wednesday, April 19.

Det Insp Bill Thornton of Kent Police said: “This is yet another positive result for the people of Dover who were shocked and appalled by the actions of people like Michael Green.

“He was a guest to the town but acted in such a manner that residents would probably prefer it if he did not come back.

“He demonstrated his inability to control his temper and must now serve several months behind bars as a result.”

The aftermath of the riots led to one of the largest investigations carried out by Kent Police in recent years.

Gradually officers caught up with thugs and by last month more than 80 people were arrested and 51 convicted.
