Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby is in Dover for Holy Week

Yesterday saw the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, visit the Emmaus centre, an organisation that supports homeless people in Dover.

Emmaus in Archcliffe Road helps those without homes by offering them food, clothes, accommodation and a small weekly allowance for working in the community.

During the tour, the Archbishop saw the shop and workshop in which second hand furniture is restored and sold, the garden, and the living quarters.

The Archbishop also spoke to many of the workers, hearing about their experiences of homelessness and how Emmaus has helped them.

The visit was led by chairman of the trustees, Liz Waller and community coordinator, Maureen Gale.

The Archbishop said: “I am delighted to be here and it has been good to meet and talk to the companions, staff and volunteers.

“This Emmaus community provides much needed support to homeless people, helping to set them back on their feet.”

The Archbishop will be continuing to spend the rest of Holy Week in Dover visiting Christian groups and projects within the town.
