Special constables looking out for speed merchants netted a suspected drug driver.

The volunteer officers were monitoring vehicles using Archers Court Road, Whitfield, and Canterbury Road, Lydden, last Wednesday.

A 27-year-old man from the Dover area was also arrested on suspicion of drug driving and later bailed pending further enquiries.

Meanwhile the team issued eight traffic offence reports to drivers seen exceeding 40mph in a 30mph zone.

More than 10 other motorists were stopped and advised about the manner of their driving or the condition of their vehicles.

Sgt Gavin Rolfe, of Dover Community Safety Unit, said: "It is up to every road user to ensure they are driving within the speed limit and in a way which does not threaten the safety of others.

"The impacts of a collision when travelling at speed can be catastrophic and Kent Police is therefore committed to enforcing traffic laws and educating drivers to the dangers.

"I am extremely grateful to the volunteers from the Special Constabulary who took part. The work they do and the support they provide to the force is much appreciated by regular officers."

Special constables are unpaid volunteers who give up at least 16 hours of their own time every month supporting regular police officers, often alongside other jobs.
