An open letter has been penned calling for an investigation into the decision to restore the whip to two MPs previously suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct.
On Wednesday, Charlie Elphicke, MP for Dover and Deal, had his whip restored in time for the Conservative confidence vote on Theresa May's position.
He says that did not influence which way he would vote.
The MP, who has always denied any wrongdoing, was suspended from the Conservative Party whip on November 3, 2017.
He has never been arrested, charged or prosecuted, for any offence.
However, the party has faced criticism over allowing Elphicke, and fellow Tory MP for Burton Andrew Griffiths, to return to have their say on Theresa May's future.
A letter written by website 38 Degrees, addressed to Andrea Leadsom MP and signed by more than 40,000 people, says: "The decision made by the Conservative Party to restore the whip to two MPs who had been suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct was made behind closed doors and without a proper explanation.
"This sudden decision empowered these MPs to take part in the vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, and welcomed them back into the Conservative Party.
"It sends a message to the public that politicians care more about protecting their own power than doing the right thing by victims of sexual misconduct. It comes after a raft of shocking allegations about sexual misconduct by politicians of all parties.
"As Leader of the House of Commons, you are responsible for business in the house and you work closely with the government’s Chief Whip. You have said you are “committed to changing the culture” of Parliament. We call on you to investigate and publicly explain this decision."
The letter has received the backing of 40,000 individuals who want to see a full-scale investigation take place to explain the reasons behind allowing the whip to be restored for both MPs.
The result of Thursday's vote meant Theresa May would remain the Prime Minister and continue at the helm as the UK works towards a Brexit solution.
Mr Elphicke said: “My family and I are grateful for the support from so many people locally who feel deeply that the whip should never have been taken away.
“I can confirm the whip was restored without any encouragement as to how I should vote.
“I did take part in the ballot and everyone knows my strong belief that we should be ready on day one and my grave concerns about the proposed Withdrawal Agreement. That said, everyone expressed their opinions and a decision was made.
“Now it's time to come together, deliver Brexit and make sure we are properly prepared so that we can clear the way to focus on our domestic priorities too.”
