The heatwave took its toll on Dover Town Carnival with entrants down by a quarter.

A total 33 had been expected but this was cut to 25 with majorette groups and participants pulling out.

Some classic cars also broke down on the way to Sunday's event.

But still more than 300 members of the public came out to watch the procession, 100 more than expected during the searing heat.

Ellen Habbershaw, carnival vice-chairman, said: "Overall it was a fantastic event which ran smoothly."

Participants in the parade on Sunday included Dover Pride, De Bradelie Wharf, Royal Mail and Dover Cineworld.

Among the prizewinners were Faversham carnival group, who won first place best visiting float.

KB Dance came first in the dance troupe category and Miss Lydd won first place for Queen of Queens.

The procession route went from the Maison Dieu Car Park to Maison Dieu Road, Pencester Road, Biggin Street, High Street, Bridge Street and back to Maison Dieu Road and the car park.

This year the charity benefiting was the Kelly Turner Foundation, named after the Dover teenager who died five years ago of a rare cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumours.
