A carnival this weekend will share profits with a charity created in the name of a teenager who died of a rare cancer.

Dover Town Carnival, which is this Sunday, will pass funds to the Kelly Turner Foundation.

Kelly, 17, who was from the town, died five years ago this coming autumn.

A statement from the carnival committee on its Facebook page said: "Every year we split our funds with a chosen charity, this year we have chosen the Kelly Turner Foundation

"Kelly Turner was our Honorary Princess of 2016."

Kelly was diagnosed with desmoplastic small round cell tumours in October 2015, an aggressive form of cancer hat occurs mostly in adolescent and young people. She was given two years to live.

During 2016/17, after he plight was made public, people in Dover district and beyond raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through events and donations.

This was to help to help pay the £1 million needed for specialist treatment in New York.

The fundraising accelerated with just over £250,000 raised by October 2016 to £500,000 the following March, just before Kelly's 17th birthday.

But she succumbed to the disease on November 6, 2017.

Her parents Martin and Linda are continuing the fundraising through the Kelly Turner Foundation to help others suffering this form of cancer,

To date it has raised £642,132.

Dover Town Carnival 2022 is from 4pm this Sunday.

The procession route is from the Maison Dieu Car Park to Maison Dieu Road, Pencester Road, Biggin Street, High Street, Bridge Street and back to Maison Dieu Road and the car park.

There is another major event in the town that same day.

The Dover White Cliffs branch of the Royal British Legion is organising a Victory over Japan Commemorative Service.

It is at 10.30am at the Dover War Memorial in Biggin Street.

It will be just before the actual VJ Day on August 15, marking the complete end of the Second World War through Japan's surrender.

The branch otherwise meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm at the Phoenix Railway Club at Crabble Hill, Dover.
