Dover residents are calling for CCTV to be used after the fountain in Market Square has been repeatedly vandalised.

Last week the Mercury reported that Dover taxpayers have had to fork out hundreds of pounds to fix the fountain after it is suspected someone poured washing up liquid in the fountain.

This has caused the fountain to overflow with bubbles.

Residents took to social media site Facebook to call for CCTV to catch the culprits.

Mike Jones said: “Surely there are cameras in place to spot these individuals?

“If not in the market place but further up the town? Maybe then they might seek justice.”

Dover District Council has been working with police but a spokesman explained that although there is CCTV in that area it has not caught the culprits in the act yet.

The DDC spokesman added: “It has to be looking at that particular area at that particular time and on this particular occasion it didn’t pick up anything.

“We have made sure it pans back to the fountain on a regular basis.”

This move to ensure that the camera focuses on the fountain comes after many people have reported the area as particularly bad for vandalism and crime.

The council added: “CCTV has been used effectively in the past in respect to the fountain.”

Police confirmed they haven’t had any incident recorded to them but a police spokesman said inspectors in Dover were looking into the matter.
