Emergency services rushed to a cliff after a body was found at its base.
The coastguard rescue helicopter and police were seen at the foot of Shakespeare Cliffs near Dover from about 2pm today.
However, police say it has not yet been possible to recover the body because of bad weather.
A police spokesman said: "Officers attended and liaised with partners including the coastguard and RNLI in an attempt to locate and recover the body, which has not yet been possible due to adverse weather conditions.
"All emergency services have now left the scene and are due to resume the search operation tomorrow (Sunday).
"Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing."
One witness said: "There were lots of police at the bottom of the steps so we couldn't go down.
"My friend's daughter found the body and called them."
