No decision on whether the Olympic Torch will come through Dover on its way to the 2012 Olympics in London is likely to be made for at least another two years.

A campaign has been launched to persuade the Olympic authorities to choose Dover as the entry point into the UK for the flame.

Lord Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee, has said he appreciates Kent’s interest in the torch entering Dover in 2012, but at the moment it is in the early stages of planning.

“We are currently developing the structure for our operations and activity moving forward,” he said.

“Whilst some scoping work has begun, in order to enable us to look at the framework for organising and delivering the torch relay, we are some years away from finalising the official route. This is likely to happen in late 2010, running into 2011.”
