A PUPIL who organised a conference on eco-business issues has now taken his campaign to encourage schools to become greener to the top.
Jack Williams, 16, has been given permission to have an on-line petition on the official 10 Downing Street website to call on the Government for more money and support for schools who want to “get green” and recycle.
“Direct funds and support is very limited,” said Jack, who is a sixth former at Dover Boys’ Grammar School, where he is eco-schools co-ordinator.
“Schools aren’t recycling enough, yet schools are among the major wasters and contributors to landfills.
“Instead of focusing on households, why doesn’t the government fund schools, and make it compulsory, for schools to recycle?
“This will also increase long-term recycling rates through education and habit. I am appealing people to vote for extra funding, support and regulation for schools to get green.
“The most signed petitions go directly to Gordon Brown and the organisers are invited to meet him. So this really could force change in this vital area.”
Jack, from Charlton Avenue, Dover, is chairman of the Green Footprint Group which organised a successful conference at the grammar school earlier this month.
The petition runs until June.
