Residents are being warned of an eight-week road closure as part of works to complete a new Fastrack bus route.
The zero-emission bus service – Kent’s first – is being created in Dover and will connect Whitfield with Dover town centre and Dover Priory railway station.
As part of the scheme, a new road and bridge have been created.
Now, Dover Road in Guston will shut from February 12 for further works, including road widening and resurfacing, as well as water supply work.
This is the only direct route from Dover town centre to the Burgoyne Heights housing estate and without it residents will have to take a long detour.
They have been sent a letter from Kent County Council telling them the road will be shut in up to three phases for at least eight weeks.
The letter says: “We are aware that there have been several closures of Dover Road since the commencement of the Dover Fastrack project although some have been related to the recent work by Affinty Water.
“We fully understand that closures do have a significant impact on residents.
“Unfortunately due to the existing width of the road a closure is the only safe way the works can be carried out.
“We will do our best to keep the duration of the works and road closures to an absolute minimum.”
The first phase of closing Dover Road is between the A258 Castle Hill Road and Burgoyne Heights for up to a week from February 12. Pedestrian and cyclists will still have full access.
Access to Guston Primary School and Burgoyne Heights will be from the Guston side. This phase is for Affinity Water to carry out its latest work.
This part of the road is most needed as it goes straight towards the town centre.
Phase 2 is the closure of Dover Road between Old Charlton Road and Burgoyne Heights from February 19 for about seven weeks.
For safety reasons pedestrians will not be able to access this stretch during the working day but a route will be provided for them outside these hours.
Access to the estate and school will be via the A258 Castle Hill Road. This part of the closure is for work both by KCC and Affinity Water.
Phase 3 is a repetition of the Phase 1 closure of Dover Road between Castle Hill Road and Burgoyne Heights. This time it is for KCC to finish its work but it hopes to do this in the week from February 12 to minimise disruption.
During all this work a signed diversion route will be provided via Dover Road, The Lane and the A258 Deal Road and Castle Hill Road.
The road had been closed from last June to September for a previous phase of piping work for new housing being developed nearby.
A previous closure of Dover Road to prepare for Fastrack was in February 2022.
It is not yet known when the Fastrack service will launch.
