Several emergency vehicles were called to Dover Castle.
At least eight vehicles were seen at the site, including five fire engines, shortly before 5pm yesterday (April 10).
Pictures taken by witness Jessica Shepherd show several firefighters at the entrance to the wartime tunnels which go beneath the castle.
A Dover Castle spokesperson said: “This was purely a precautionary measure due to smoke being seen rising through a drain shaft.
“They couldn't find anything on investigation and the smoke dissipated.
“This didn't impact our operations yesterday.”
