Firefighters have issued a warning over keeping piles of rubbish outside homes after a cardboard blaze.

One fire engine was called to Clarendon Street in Dover at midnight last night to put out a pile of cardboard which had caught fire.

Watch manager, Paul Mellett said the fire had started because of a discarded cigarette.

He said: "A discarded cigarette set alight a pile of cardboard stacked up against a building and set fire to the cladding.

"People should be mindful of leaving lots of rubbish stacked up outside the house. If it set fire it could burn your house down."

He added that people should also be mindful of how they discard their cigarettes.

Fire crews were at the scene for around 20 minutes and extinguished the blaze using a hose reel.
