Unwanted household items were dumped in Old Charlton Road last week.

Two sofas, a chest of drawers, a bed, rubbish bags and plastic bottles were left in the road on Wednesday night.

And by Friday morning more items had been added to the pile.

Peter Sherred, a South Foreland Rotary Club member who contacted the Mercury about the incident, said: “This is a most blatant anti-social act and someone somewhere must recognise the sofa in particular and know who is responsible for this deposit.

“Someone presumably carried it up the road, or took it up there in a vehicle, deliberately to dump this.

“Poor old DDC and, therefore, the council tax payers have the inconvenience of picking it up and bearing the cost of doing so.”

Part of a bed was seen overhanging the pavement, potentially causing danger to motorists using the road which acts as a short-cut to Guston or the A258.

“This is really disgraceful and a traffic hazard as well,” he added.

A call has been made for residents to keep a watchful eye on the area in a bid to try to catch the culprits.

A district council spokesman said: “We can confirm there were two incidents of fly-tipping on Old Charlton Road last week and we have taken action to have both incidents cleared.

“We would stress that fly-tipping is a criminal offence and DDC will always take appropriate enforcement action where there is sufficient evidence to identify those responsible.

“We would also remind people that not only is fly-tipping unsightly, but it can create health hazards, and costs tax payers’ money to clear.”
