A former headteacher and father of The Clash drummer has died aged 93.
Rotary Club member Phil Headon, from River near Dover, passed away on April 18.
His son Nick “Topper” Headon found fame with The Clash punk rock band – which is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – in the late 1970s.
Mr Headon Sr was born in January 1930 in Bridgend, Wales, as one of seven children including his twin brother William who died a few years ago from cancer.
He was in National Service from 1948 to 1949 in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and afterwards briefly worked for British Railways.
Mr Headon went to St Paul’s Teacher Training School in Cheltenham in September 1950 where he met his wife Margaret and they married in Bridgend in 1952.
Following training he took up his first teaching post in primary education at the Valley County Primary School in Bromley, staying there for eight years.
Afterwards, for three years, he was deputy head teacher in St Albans before taking up a headship at Crockenhill Primary School near Swanley.
Mr Headon was there for four years before moving to Whitfield Primary School at Dover as head teacher in 1967. He retired from there in December 1989.
He oversaw the development and introduction of the school’s Aspen Unit in 1976, supporting children with special needs from a wide area of east Kent.
Mrs Headon taught at St Mary's Primary School in Dover and then River Primary School.
Mr and Mrs Headon enjoyed 20 years of retirement before she died in 2009.
As well as Nick, the couple had a second son, David.
Mr Headon’s local activities included being a member and social secretary of Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club, and vice president of Dover Rugby Club.
He joined the Rotary Club of Dover Rotary Club in July 1972 and was its president in 1979-1980.
In his last years he had suffered from Parkinson’s Disease.
Topper Headon, now aged 67, is a former Dover Grammar School for Boys pupil and also lives in east Kent.
He joined The Clash at the height of the punk era in 1977 and was with them until 1982. The group ended completely in 1986 after 10 years.
He wrote the music for one of their best loved songs, Rock the Casbah.
The band’s other famous tunes included White Riot, Tommy Gun, I Fought the Law and Should I Stay or Should I Go and they put out landmark albums such as London Calling.
