Plans to transform the site of a former vets into six homes have emerged.

Maison Dieu Vets in Dover left the building in Maison Dieu Road in June and moved into a new state-of-the-art practice in a former Carpetright showroom.

The renovation of the previously vacant shop in Granville Street cost the team at the vets £1 million.

Now, a planning application has been submitted to convert their old building into four flats. Two maisonettes already exist within the large venue.

If plans are approved, the accommodation – a mix of one and two-beds – will be created over three floors.

Plans also involve demolishing an existing laundry room to the rear of the property and adding two escape windows.

The 12 parking spaces will be retained as part of the development.

Under the proposals, the building will remain the same from the outside as it’s converted back to accommodation; it had previously been two houses before Maison Dieu Vets took it over.

No objections have been lodged against the plans, which have been submitted to Dover District Council by Jas Hayre.

Dover Town Council are supporting the change of use.

Maison Dieu Vets relocated into its expanded home in the old Carpertright in Granville Street last month, just 500m from their old site.

Bosses said the new £1 million modern practice will allow them to treat more pets and offer better services.

The new location features four consulting rooms and a bigger reception with separate waiting and kennel areas for cats and dogs.

There are also walk-in kennels for large breeds, an isolation ward for very sick pets, two operating theatres and an in-house lab.

In another change for vets in Dover last month, Burnham House vets in Castle Street closed permanently due to “extensive” building issues.

Staff and clients at the venue were informed by Medivet, the company which has owned the business since 2019, that they would be transferred to a sister branch in Folkestone.

Dover District Council is set to make a decision on the application for the Maison Dieu Road site later in the year.
