Work has started to bulldoze a former gasworks site more than 80 years after it was last used.

The facility in Coombe Valley Road, Dover, is being flattened as part of a demolition project approved last year.

The redundant gasholder station became operational in 1868 but has been unused since 1940.

Drone pictures taken by resident Mark Hamilton show demolition work has begun at the site, with documents indicating it should be complete by February.

The project was approved in July 2021, but there are currently no further plans for the site once the work is complete.

On a separate plot of land in Coombe Valley Road there is a proposal for 40 new homes to be built.

The planning application has received backlash from residents who believe they will be left living "in a goldfish bowl", claiming the "prison-like" block of flats will tower over their houses.

The apartment building will reach four storeys in height, with neighbours concerned it will overshadow the small terraced houses in Victoria Street.
