The Olympic handover to Great Britain ready for London 2012 was celebrated with a street party in Dover.

Free activities and entertainment including live music, street entertainers, stalls and other attractions featured throughout the day.

Also there was a special street athletics event and Battle of the Bands competition with a giant fireworks display from the Prince of Wales Pier closing the celebrations.

The Town Mayor of Dover Cllr Diane Smallwood, the chairman of the district council Cllr Bernard Butcher and Dover and Deal MP Gwyn Prosser raised the Olympic flag to show local support for the games.

Mr Prosser used the occasion to make a rallying cry for the Olympic torch to come through Dover in 2012 like it did when the games were last held in Britain in 1948.

"It was a great success then and I am sure it would be an even bigger success now.

"We are lobbying the Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell and other ministers. We are writing directly to the Olympics committee.

"This is not just a Dover effort but has been acknowledged by Kent County Council who are heading up this campaign.

"With more people raising their support at this Olympic Handover ceremony in Dover we have a better chance of getting a positive result."

Dover's London 2012 Olympic rowing hopeful Hannah Moon was given the honour of rowing the Olympic flag along the seafront to be received by Mr Prosser, Cllr Smallwood and Cllr Butcher.

"It would be amazing to see the Olympic torch come through Dover in 2012" said Miss Moon.

"Since the start of the games in Beijing I have been glued to the TV and it has made me realise how much I want to be there in London in four years representing my country and the town where I was born."
