Dover District Council gets £267,000 from Welcome Back Fund after pandemic lockdowns

Hundreds of plant bulbs will burst into colour in time for spring following the latest work on 16 planters.

The efforts at Dover town centre, also including weeding and refilling compost, were by the environmental improvements group Transition Dover.

Members were recently met by Dover District Council leader Trevor Bartlett.

He said: "We know that these remain challenging times, but with the council’s vision for regeneration in Dover and support from groups like Transition Dover we continue to work together to help shape a great future.”

The planting has been paid for by the Government's Welcome Back Fund, formerly called Reopening High Streets Safely.

This is for councils to encourage people to return safely to town centres after the pandemic lockdowns.

DDC has been allocated £267,000 and has worked with town and parish councils and community groups on projects such as public information and safety campaigns, and Covid safety adaptations and training.

Future plans for the fund include jet washing including at Bench Street in Dover and Timeball Tower Forecourt in Deal, market gazebos, planters and plants.

Also listed is a disabled access bench, picnic benches and a parklet, a form of street bench, for Deal.
