An "organised gang" has stolen valuable items worth thousands from the historic Drop Redoubt fort in Dover.
The Napoleonic gem was ransacked between Saturday, November 1 and Thursday November 26.
The opportunists accessed the area through three separate points by destroying the chains and padlocks.
It is thought that the tool-store was targeted, where the items were lowered out of the fort.
A portable generator, two toolboxes, two Burco water boilers used in the on-site cafe, three petrol gas strimmers and an electric buzz saw are just a handful of the items stolen.
The Western Heights Preservation Society, purely run by volunteers, have responded to the attack and estimate that £2,500 will be needed to replenish the stock.
Volunteer Phil Eyden believes that an organised gang has broken into the premises.
He said: "This is the worst attack we have ever had.
"Stealing from a charity, how low can you go?
"It is devastating news for the society, for all the volunteers who have put so much hard work into opening the fort for the public to enjoy.
"In a single night more than 12 months income has been wiped out.
"We still hope to provide events next year, but until we stake stock of what has happened, nothing at this stage can be guaranteed."
The fort has been opened up to people at various points this year, attracting thousands of visitors to the site.
The police are working with the society and English Heritage to investigate.
