The Home Secretary is set to meet with her French counterpart to discuss how to deal with migrants attempting to cross the Channel.

Priti Patel will raise the issue after a total of 37 people were yesterday brought to Dover after the boats they were being carried in were intercepted.

On arrival, they were taken for medical assessments and interviewed by immigration officials.

Two other boats were reported to have landed on a beach in Winchelsea, East Sussex yesterday.

On Wednesday two small boats containing a total of 21 migrants were brought ashore.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: "We continue to monitor the ongoing situation and are working closely at all levels with French authorities on the issue."

"The home secretary will raise this issue with her French counterpart in the coming days."

Miss Patel, who became home secretary on July 24, has taken over dealing with the migrant crisis from Sajid Javid.

In December, Mr Javid declared the number of people crossing the Channel a "major incident" and deployed more boats to patrol the waters.

The first of yesterday's alerts was at 2.30am and involved nine people, eight men and woman who said they were Iranian.

The next was at about 5am and involved 11 people, nine men and two boys, who presented themselves as being from Iran, Guinea, Kuwait and the Ivory Coast.

The third alert was at 7am and six men, who said they were Iranian, were picked up.

The fourth callout was at 11.30am and there were 11 people including four claimed minors. They presented themselves as Iranian nationals.

In all these four cases Border Force was alerted to small boats crossing the Channel to the UK.

These cases are the latest in a trend over the last year of migrants trying to reach the UK by crossing the Channel in small vessels.

Kent Online's count of cases, included yesterday's detailed four incidents, adds up to a net of 44 since last November 8 involving 380 people with these latest incidents.

This is for migrants who have landed onshore in Kent or been rescued and brought in by British authorities.

Incidents have happened in the areas of Dover, Deal, Folkestone and Romney Marsh.

There is a gross figure of 49 incidents over this time involving a total 459 people.

This figure also includes migrants stopped by French authorities and returned to France.
