The Operation Dover Facebook page, set up by trader, Amy Howie – who has a shop called My Patina’d Heart in the Charlton Centre – has proved very popular in the district.

Mrs Howie said: “People have donated toys, games and Christmas hamper contents – my shop is becoming a real Aladdin’s cave.

The trader is also running a raffle in the shop with all proceeds going towards the fund.

The presents will be given to recipients at a Christmas lunch held at the Smart Gallery, inside the Clocktower on December 12.

Co-director of the Smart Project, Dawn Maddison, said: “Operation Dover is a brave and bold idea we are more than happy to help in any way we can, what a fantastic idea.”

Dover’s mayor, Pam Brivio, who will be attending the lunch, said: “Grassroot initiatives
such as this have a huge impact and I applaud Amy for giving her time to such a great cause”
