AB-FAB star Joanna Lumley and Dover MP Gwyn Prosser will be presenting a giant postcard to DEFRA, calling for last minute action to save British calves from once again becoming victims of the live export trade.
Ben Bradshaw MP, parliamentary secretary for DEFRA, will be accepting the postcard on behalf of the department's Minister Margaret Beckett MP.
The presentation, on behalf of Compassion in World Farming, is due to take place on Tuesday on the eve of the resumption of British cattle exports which have been banned by the EU since the 1996 BSE crisis.
As a result of the lifting of the ban, from Wednesday, up to half a million British calves could be exported every year. Protestors say the animals often endure immense suffering on long journeys by land and sea.
When they reach their destination farms it is likely they will be kept in conditions that would be illegal here on welfare grounds.
"We are calling on DEFRA to change the fate of thousands of calves doomed for export and suffering," said Philip Lymbery, CIWF Chief Executive.
"This means actively encouraging farmers to rear male dairy calves in the UK where conditions for calves are better, and securing welfare standards on farms in the rest of the EU that are equal to them or better."
Ms Lumley, who used to live in East Kent, is a leading CIWF supporter and animal welfare campaigner.
A big rally and protest march is planned for Dover on Saturday, May 6.
