A VISIT from TV personality and artist Rolf Harris brightened up a foggy day on Kent’s White Cliffs.

The Animal Hospital presenter, also known for his 1980s children’s show Cartoon Time, was filmed at South Foreland Lighthouse for a one-off programme called Made in England.

The regional show follows Australian Rolf, who once painted the Queen, as he visits places in England he has never seen.

His visit to the National Trust site was to gain inspiration for a final piece of art he will create.

Rolf said: “I have been touring Kent to find a different perspective on England and visiting the White Cliffs was certainly inspirational. It gave me plenty to think about.”

In other variations of the show, creative personalities such as poet Ian McMillan, folk singer Seth Lakeman and wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering will make similar programmes for broadcast in the regions they are visiting.

National Trust spokesman for the South Foreland Lighthouse Harvey Edgington said Rolf was shown a painting of the area by actor, playwright and composer Sir Noel Coward to try to inspire him.

“We welcome filming where possible about the White Cliffs of Dover. We are delighted Rolf came along.

“Clearly he has got an interest in the area, and hopefully he too will come back to visit St Margaret’s himself,” he said.

Other attractions featured in the programme include the Shell Grotto in Margate, Chatham Historic Dockyard, Brighton seafront and a Romany gipsy site in Cranbrook.

Made in England will be shown on BBC1 on St George’s Day and William Shakespeare’s birthday, Wednesday April 23, at 10.35pm.
