A memorial plaque for the victims of the Crypt restaurant fire will be unveiled today, on the 42nd anniversary of the tragedy.

It will happen at 11am in the subway next to the site of the original premises.

About 200 people are expected at the service, which will be attended by survivors and relatives.

This will include Christine McCaughan who escaped with her life and and Glenda Sharp, widow of the fireman, John Sharp, who died that night.

Other firefighters who fought the blaze will also be present along with Father Jeff Cridland of St Paul's Church, Dover, and a Kent Fire and Rescue Service representative.

Hymns will be sung and music played by a classical quartet.

Sean Bone-Knell, director of operations at KFRS, said: "The plaque will be a lasting memorial to the seven people who lost their lives in such tragic circumstances 42 years ago, but also act as a tribute to those who suffered injuries both physical and mental; but survived.

"The plaque serves as a reminder to all us about the responsibilities we have in keeping people safe in our homes, businesses and public buildings."

Three children, aged 18 months, five and six, were among the seven who were killed when fire tore through the premises on March 27, 1977.
