A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after an articulated truck blocked Whitfield roundabout near Dover.

The trapped vehicle only added to traffic problems caused by ferry delays resulting from heightened security checks in the wake of the Paris attacks, as well as bad weather.

The A2 was blocked in both directions by the truck at A256 Whitfield Hill, but is now open.

The lorry has now been recovered and the roundabout is clear.

The obstruction came as more motorists took to the A2 in an attempt to avoid the heavy traffic on the A20.

Dover itself was at a standstill earlier, with drivers reporting long queues and several bus services cancelled.
