A demonstrator who held a one-man protest, causing a road to close for hours, was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police now confirm the man was taken safely away after his actions led to Jubilee Way in Dover being shut for about seven-and-a-half hours yesterday.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We were called due to concern for the welfare of a man.

"Officers attended and the road was closed to ensure the safety of all members of the public.

"The man, who is in his 40s, was safely detained under the Mental Health Act."

Police had originally been alerted at around 8.35am.

This was after reports that a man appeared to have tied himself to the A2 Jubilee Way, above Dover Eastern Docks, having climbed over the railings.

He was standing next to the banner which made accusations against Kent Police.

It also said: "The Government has let them do this. Welcome to Russia."

National Highways provided updates on the situation to warn drivers hoping to use the key road, which was closed in both directions between the A258 and A20 roundabouts.

It said there were no significant delays in the area.

During the closure the Port of Dover authority said the port remained open but advised drivers to use the A20 to catch ferries.

Police say the protester was safely detained at about 3.55pm and the road was reopened at around 4.20pm.
