An asylum seeker who used "extreme violence" to stab a love rival through the heart has been locked up indefinitely for public protection.

Zamir Veseli will have to serve a minimum of seven-and-a-half years before the parole board will consider if it is safe to order his release.

A judge recommended that the 27-year-old should eventually be deported back to Kosovo. He has lived in the UK for 10 years. The sentence was imposed after Veseli refused have a psychiatric report prepared on him.

He had bragged that his relationship with victim Matthew Stables's ex-girlfriend Geraldine Agovi was "just sex" and he had no great emotional attachment to her.

But Judge James O'Mahony said Veseli was jealous and lay in wait for Mr Stables in Dover because he felt "pure hatred" for him.

Canterbury Crown Court heard that Mr Stables had been in a four-year relationship with Miss Agovi, which ended in June last year. But she still sent him affectionate texts, despite starting a relationship with Veseli.

Mr Stables showed the texts to Veseli and he responded by threatening to kill him, his mother and his children.

It was on July 31 that Veseli pounced in Beaconsfield Road and stabbed Mr Stables. The victim needed emergency surgery at a London hospital to save his life.

Veseli, of no fixed addressed, denied wounding with intent but was convicted. He was acquitted of attempted murder.
