A dad was shocked to discover a screw bolt in his drink from McDonald’s – and is unhappy with the way his complaint was handled.
Russell Mayes, 29, of Douglas Road, Dover, bought a Coca-Cola from the takeaway in the town's Biggin Street, before heading to his office at CEX in Priory Street, Dover, where he is the store manager.
He claims it was not until he had nearly finished the drink that he found a plastic and metal screw bolt inside his cup.
He said: “I was in my office doing some paperwork. I always drink my Coke without a straw and the lid off.
"As I was drinking, I felt a bang against my teeth, I looked down and it was a bolt or screw or something. It was all rusted and dirty.”
Mr Mayes lives with his partner Emily Powley, 22, and their two children Ruby, five, and Ralph, who is 18 months old.
He said: “It looked like part of the machinery, it must have fallen off.
“It’s quite big, about the same size as a door key, maybe a little bit smaller. I’m glad I didn’t swallow it. The more worrying thing is I take my kids in there once a week.”
Mr Mayes said he was given vouchers as compensation from McDonald’s, but he claims these were the same vouchers posted through doors as a free giveaway.
He said this was not acceptable and has now taken his complaint to the McDonald’s head office.
A spokesman for McDonald’s said: “We would like to apologise to the customer for their experience when visiting our Dover restaurant.
“Food safety is our highest priority and both our restaurants and our suppliers place great emphasis on quality control and follow rigorous standards in order to avoid imperfections in our products.
“We have made contact with the customer and will be launching a full investigation to resolve this matter.”
