A host of power lifting competitors put their muscles to the challenge last weekend in a free event at the White Cliffs Theatre.

It was branded as an unequipped classic, which meant that lifters were not allowed to wear any supportive clothing which aids the lifting process.

Days were spent setting up the area, on site at the Astor College for the Arts in Astor Avenue.

The competition - which took place for those who enjoy the sport - aimed to create a championship feel to the event.

Nearly 120 took part, and a packed audience of nearly 200 people sat in suspense as each power lifter took to the stage.

Certificates were given to each one, but those who did exceptionally well were awarded with trophies.

Power lifter, David Cridland, 20, from Dover said: “On the day there was a guy called Tony Cliff - he did a 300kg dead lift which was unreal.”

Mr Cridland is part of the Astor Power Lifting team, which is situated within the Astor College for the Arts College. They aim to expand their group - encouraging anyone from intermediate to beginners to come along for a session.

The club meets at the school’s gym every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4pm to 7pm.
