Police in Dover are appealing for witnesses following the discovery of a newborn baby, found abandoned near the Eastern Docks.

The discovery was made by a local resident in an alleyway off East Cliff at 10.45pm on Tuesday.

The baby boy, who was thought to have been hours old when found, was taken to hospital were he was treated for exposure to the cold. His condition is not life threatening.

Police say they traced a woman they believe to be his mother a short time later, and she is also receiving treatment at hospital.
